The city has 6.55 million registered inhabitants, while the greater Bangkok area has a population of 12,200,000 (JAN10). Bangkok is one to two meters above sea level, causing problems protecting the city against flooding during the monsoon. The city registered 1,050 skyscrapers, ranked as No. 17 of the world's top cities. Bangkok is divided into 50 districts. Each district is headed by a chief appointed by the Governor. The municipal council is elected every four years, serving as advisers for their respective district chiefs.

From our narrow boat we wave at the playful kids along the riverbanks and absorb the delightful sight of golden temples, houses on stilts and the green bamboo stretching across the water. Day 3 – The Bridge on the River Kwai (B, L, D)

Overnight on River Kwai Jungle Raft or Kwai Resotel

Before we depart for our 2 day/ 1 night tour to the River Kwai we pack a bag containing the most necessary things. The rest of our luggage will be stored at the hotel.

We start early so we can avoid most of Bangkok’s morning traffic and head for Kanchanaburi in our air conditioned transportation.

We visit the war memorial and museum. Afterwards we drive to the legendary railway bridge spanning the River Kwai, build during the 2nd. World War. Japanese occupational forces needed a link of transport between Bangkok and Burma.

Later we departure onboard a long-tailed boat to the River Kwai Jungle Rafts. Along the way we pass through an unspoiled mountainous landscape of dense jungle, rivers valleys with a rich fauna.  The nature at Kwai River is unbelievable beautiful.

Check-in on arrival at River Kwai Jungle Rafts. Lunch will be served. After lunch we ones again take the exciting boat ride – this time downstream to Resotel Pier and continue to visit to the Hell Fire Pass Memorial.

Well back at the raft again it’s time to relax and enjoy paradise.

Hint: Anyone with just a minimum ability to swim should not deny himself or herself the thrilling experience to throw oneself into the river wearing a life west. You float with the current along the floating raft houses. Important though is to grip on to one of the last rafts. The river water is brownish, it is supposed to be and it does not mean that the water is dirty. The color comes from sediment carried along by the river

Dinner at the raft house restaurant followed by traditional Mon tribal dance show.

Night at River Kwai Jungle Rafts

Fabulous raft resort in the jungle on the River Kwai near the Burmese borderline. A cozy floating hotel with simple facilities – bungalows built on bamboo floats all rooms have bath/toilet.  You will not find electricity here only fireflies and kerosene lamps will light up the dark.  All the sounds of the jungle are clearly heard when darkness falls.

Overnight at River Kwai Resotel can be chosen in stead.

In the jungle - near the Mon-tribes village is River Kwai Jungle Raft. Primitive in a nice way.

iver and canals network See also: Category:Crossings of the Chao Phraya River An elaborate network of canals known as khlongs gave Bangkok the nickname "Venice of the East" at a time when most transportation was by boat. Today, nearly all of the canals have been filled in and converted into streets. While many khlongs still exist with people living along them and markets often being operated along the banks, most are severely polluted.[19] A notable khlong market is the floating market in Taling Chan district. Through downtown Bangkok runs the Khlong Saen Saeb, which has a canal boat service. The wide river Chao Phraya, flowing through the city, has several cross-river ferries and the Chao Phraya Express Boat with as many as thirty stops along the both banks extending as far as the northern suburb of Nonthaburi.
[edit]Roads Several elevated highways, newly rebuilt intersections, and many partially finished road and rail projects dot the landscape around greater Bangkok, but have done little to overcome the notorious traffic jams on Bangkok's surface roads as private vehicle usage continues to outstrip infrastructure development. Due to a large number of traffic jams in Bangkok, the elevated highway (Thai: ทางด่วน, RTGS: thang duan, "express way"), linking most road networks in Bangkok together, is another choice for the rush. However, tax is to be paid for utilizing the highway depending on size of the vehicle. This highway also leads to some outskirts of Bangkok including Suvarnabhumi International Airport.
[edit]Inner-City Buses A regular bus service is provided by the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) and it operates throughout Bangkok as well as to adjoining provinces around the clock on certain routes. Public buses are plentiful and cheap, with a minimum fare of 7 baht to most destinations within metropolitan Bangkok. Air-conditioned buses have minimum and maximum fares of 11 and 24 baht, respectively. Air-conditioned micro-buses charge a flat fare of 25 baht all routes. A bus route map is available at bookshops. BTS, Skytrain over Sala Daeng Intersection On the birthday of HM King Rama IX, 5 December 1999, an elevated two-line Skytrain (officially called BTS) metro system was opened. The remains of the failed BERTS (Hopewell) project can still be seen all the way from the main railroad station out towards Don Mueang Airport. Due to the Asian financial crisis of 1997 construction was halted and the concrete pillars were left unused. The MRT subway system opened for use in July 2004. The MRT connects the northern train station of Bang Sue to the Hua Lamphong central railway station near the city centre, while also going through the eastern part of Bangkok. It connects to the BTS system at BTS stations Mo Chit, Asok, and Sala Daeng. A new high speed elevated railroad called the Suvarnabhumi Airport Link, currently under construction, will link the city with the new Suvarnabhumi Airport. The announced opening date has been pushed to back to December 2009, then later to March 2010. The Airport Express railway is to be operated by the State Railway of Thailand. It will provide a 28.5 km (17.7 mi) link between the new airport and the City Air Terminal (CAT) at Makkasan with connections to the BTS at Phaya Thai and MRT at Phetchaburi. There are plans to extend the line to Don Mueang and Rangsit (SRT Dark Red Line), but again, this is very dependent on the political situation. Plans have been approved for a further extension of the BTS Silom line from Wongwian Yai to Bang Wa (4.5 km/2.8 mi), Samrong to Samut Prakan (8 km/5.0 mi), Mo Chit The river is chiefly known from the Pierre Boulle novel and David Lean film The Bridge on the River Kwai, in which Australian, Dutch and British prisoners of war were forced by the Japanese to construct two parallel bridges spanning the river

Day 4 – Mon tribe village & "Death of Railway" (B, L)

After a healthy breakfast we will visit the nearby ethnic Mon Tribal Village - se the school and maybe buy some Burmese cigars or a nice and practical sarong. Before noon we will check out and board the longtailboat back to the main pier where we will enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant. After lunch we will take you to the train with the ominous nickname “Railway of Death”.

Allied prisoners of war and local forced labor built the 415 km long railway. Because of the inhumane nature of the work 16.000 war prisoners and 100.000 locals perished during construction.  The train will move slowly and “squeaking” across the old wooden construction midst the green jungle.

The adventure in Kanchanaburi Province is finished and the bus will bring U back to The Royal River Hotel in Bangkok at about 18:30.

angkok (wörtlich übersetzt: Dorf im Pflaumenhain, thail. offiziell Krung Thep Mahanakhon [kruŋtʰêːp máhǎː-nákʰon], Thai: กรุงเทพมหานคร ( anhören?/i), kurz Krung Thep, กรุงเทพฯ – meist übersetzt mit Stadt der Engel) ist seit 1782 die Hauptstadt des Königreichs Thailand und ein besonderes Verwaltungsgebiet.
Der offizielle Name der Stadt lautet seit damals in der Kurzform Krung Thep ( กรุงเทพฯ?/i) – also „Stadt der Engel“.

Hele denne øen hører ind under National & Marine Park myndighederne i Thailand.
