Day 2 – Full day Klong (canal) tour (B + L)

Bangkok is best seen from the river so we will begin with the tour on some of the many canals, called Klongs, in Thai language.

We visit part of the city which remains authentic and away from the beaten tourist track.

09:00 the English speaking local guide will be waiting for you in the lobby. First a short walk to the pier for the express boat there will take us to Nonthaburi,

Here we hire our own long tail boat and will be sailing down the main “street” where you will see bathing children and women washing their hair in the river. We see a different Bangkok – a green and peaceful part of the metropolis. We enjoy a local lunch on the way. From our narrow boat we wave at the playful kids along the riverbanks and absorb the delightful sight of golden temples, houses on stilts and the green bamboo stretching across the water.

The tour ends about 15:00

Day 3 – River Kwai & Jungle Raft (B+L+D)

Railway of Death

Before we depart for our 2 day/ 1 night tour to the River Kwai we pack a bag containing the most necessary things. The rest of our luggage will be stored at the hotel.

Bring: hygienic accessories-change of clothes-swim suit-camera-personal medicine-mosquito spray-flash light-guide book and not much else.

We start early so we can avoid most of Bangkok’s morning traffic and head for Kanchanaburi.

6:00-6:30 our local guide pick us up at the Hotel and we board our air-con minibus.

Well arrived in Kanchanaburi about 3 hours later, we visit the war cemetery and museum, which is build as a replica of a Japanese working camp.

Afterwards we drive to the legendary railway bridge spanning the River Kwai and board the train with the ominous nickname “Railway of Death”.

This railway was build during the Second World War because the Japanese occupational forces needed a link of transport between Bangkok and Burma. Allied prisoners of war and local forced labor built the 415 km long railway. Because of the inhumane nature of the work 16.000 war prisoners and 100.000 locals perished during construction.  The train will move slowly and “squeaking” across the old wooden construction midst the green jungle.

12:15 arriving at Nam Tok railway station there is only a short distance to the Pakseng pier where we eat our lunch.

13:30 Departure onboard a long tailed boat to the River Kwai Jungle Rafts.

Along the way we pass through an unspoiled mountainous landscape of dense jungle rivers valleys and a rich fauna.  The nature at Kwai River is beautiful.

15:00 after check-in at the rafts we visit the adjacent Mon tribe village. Then it’s just a matter of relaxing and enjoy paradise.

Hint: Anyone with just a minimum ability to swim should not deny himself or herself the thrilling experience to throw oneself into the river wearing a life west.

You float with the current along the floating raft houses. Important though is to grip on to one of the last rafts. The river water is brownish, it is supposed to be and it does not mean that the water is dirty. The color comes from sediment carried along by the river.

19:00 dinner at the raft house restaurant followed by traditional Mon tribal dance show.

Night at River Kwai Jungle Rafts

Fabulous raft resort in the jungle on the River Kwai near the Burmese borderline. A cozy floating hotel with simple facilities – bungalows built on bamboo floats – all rooms have bath/toilet.  You will not find electricity here only fireflies and kerosene lamps will light up the dark.  All the sounds of the jungle are clearly heard when darkness falls.

Elephants at the Jungle Raft

Mon tribe staff on the raft

Extent your stay with 1 day at the River Kwai Jungle Raft and visit the Tiger Temple.

River Kwai Jungle Rafts

Day 4 – Keang Lawa Caves (B + L)

After a healthy breakfast we will be heading for the Keang Lawa Caves. Our experienced guide will lead us through the caves that were first discovered in 1968.  With a little luck we will see bats sleeping through the day.

Back at our floating accommodation we will take lunch and check out the Jungle Raft.

Departure back for Pakseng pier by long tail boat. The bus will bring us back to The Royal River Hotel at the end of the day.

Night in Royal River Hotel

(Night can be cut here if you want late flight to an other destination)
