Ko Tapu (JAMES BOND ISLAND) / From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ko Tapu (Thai: nail island, also sometimes Khao Tapu, nail hill) is an island located in the Phang Nga Bay, Thailand. It has become a popular tourist attraction since it was featured in the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun in 1974; for this reason, it is also often referred to as James Bond Island (the later 1997 James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies also includes a scene in Phang Nga Bay, close to James Bond Island). Ko Tapu island is about 20 meters tall, and lies approximately 150 meters offshore of the two-islet pair known as the island Ko Khao Phingkan (Thai: "hills resting on each other island").

Departing from Phuket island, day-tours using longtail boats usually land at Ko Khao Phingkan, where market booths are set up. The islands are located within the Ao Phang Nga National Park and National Park fee is either included in packed tours or colleted on the spot.

After exploring the floating fishing village everybody gets back onto the long tail boat and heads for the prime attraction, James Bond Island A 15-minute boat ride later and the island comes into view The island that you disembark onto is crowded with stalls selling seashells and trinkets but unfortunately nobody has taken the initiative to create or sell anything of interest to Bond fans. No replica golden guns, no postcards of the film, not even a DVD of the film. The people on the stalls are pushy but easy to avoid, just don't go near them. Beer is pretty expensive on the island at double the market price but it is not available at the Muslim fishing village so this is the place to get it if you fancy a can. Confusing signs are placed around the island that try to explain how the rock was formed but these are written in "Tinglish" so make very little sense. The tour guides normally give you 30 minutes on the island; just long enough take some pictures, have a drink and go to the toilet James Bond Island Phang-Nga What does it take to put a tourist destination on the international map? Great beaches, crystal clear water, clement weather? Not really… You are certainly best off trying to get it into a James Bond movie! The 1974 film ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’ is remembered for three things; a gun (made up of gold jewellery), an arch villain (Scaramanga), and those odd shaped little islands where Scaramanga set up base Although on the tourist circuit they are collective know as James Bond Island, there were in fact two islands featured in the movie. Koh Khao Phing Kan in Phang-Nga Bay was the bad guy’s base and cone-shaped (broad at the top and narrow at the bottom) Koh Tapu where he hid what we would call today a ‘weapon of mass destruction Although there is no doubt that James Bond Island is a ‘must see’ destination, you are probably aware of what you will get. Most people reach the island by tour and although there are some genuinely beautiful sights to be seen, the tours usually involve you being dropped of on a beach to be confronted by swarms of vendors trying to palm off tasteless souvenirs! The tours do often include a lunch at Koh Panyi which is a step in the right direction Our advice: Do it despite everything, it’s an enjoyable trip How to get there: There is a bus boat that moves around the islands and ends up at James Bond Island but by far the largest number of people do this trip via a tour from Phuket that takes people through some of the major sites on the way.
