The nine islands lie in a north-south direction from the islands of Ko Bon, Ko Ba Ngu, Ko Similan, Ko Payu, Ko Ha, Ko Miang, Ko Payan, Ko Payang to Ko Hu Yong, and the untouched island of Ko Ta Chai nearby.

Sites to the west of the islands are open to the sea while hard coral is characteristic of the sites on the east. Multicoloured and unspoiled corals cover the seabed, including the brilliant soft corals, immense sea fans, dazzling sea pansies and huge sponges.

Marine and Wildlife:
Beneath the sea at Mu Ko Similan National Park lies a complex ecosystem commonly called the rainforest of the sea: the coral reef. The major residents of the reef are coral and the closely related sea anemones; of the Phylum Cnidaria, Class Anthozoa, which contains all radially symmetrical invertebrate animals. Corals and sea anemones exist as individual polyps living in either solitary or mostly colonial forms. The polyps of hard corals construct communal limestone homes which are built up into a multitude of shapes and sizes eventually giving rise to a coral reef. Soft corals have soft bodies made of large numbers of identical polyps connected by fleshy tissue (Zooxanthallae). These soft corals contain small algae within their tissues which are able to convert the sun's energy into food. This cooperative relationship is known as symbiosis and also exists in hard corals, clams and other marine organisms. There are several factors that support good environment for the reef i.e. temperature, salinity, light, wave and tide, sedimentation and nutrient. Therefore, healthy coral reef can be found easily in the Andaman Sea comparing to the Gulf of Thailand. Good to Know

Go back to the top

The nine islands with dive sites

Koh Similan consists of 9 small islands, stretching in North – South direction about 70 km from the coast of Khao Lak in the Phang Nga province.

The Marine National Park was establish in 1982 and extended with the islands of Koh Tachai og Koh Bon in the North in 1998. The law of the National Park covers today 140 km2, with only 14 km2 covering land.

The islands consist of granite there found its way to the surface as magma from the inner of the earth about 65 million years ago. As time has passed glaciers for the ice age have polished the surface together with the movement of the waves.

By divers the sites at Similan Islands rank among the 10 best in the world. Besides the unique under water environment with its wealth in coral and fish stock the life of the creatures on land also is of distinctive character

The environment is typical for smaller islands. Where you ever will be you will never be far from the ocean. Natural fresh water deposits are few and for that reason bigger mammals do not exist. However you will find 27 species of smaller mammals like bats, crab-eating macaques, langurs (kind of monkey like creature), squirrels, hedgehogs and civet cat. Furthermore 22 reptiles have been recorded such as chameleons, snakes and monitors for the most. 39 birds have been counted as both stationary and birds of passage. Among this white breast sea eagle, terns and the Nicobar pigeon.
