Similan Island – West of Khao Lak

You will find the Similan Islands like a string of pearls in the Andaman Sea about 70 km from the coast line of the Phang Nga province where also Khao Lak is located. The Islands are uninhabited and under protection of the authorities of the National Park. No commercial activity is allowed and therefore you will find no private owned hotels, restaurants or shops. Only on 2 islands the National Park authorities run some tent camps, bungalows and restaurants. Public access to the islands is closed down 6 month a year to give the environment a rest. The 2004 tsunami left the coral gardens almost untouched because of the surrounding ocean depth.

Important Info:

For those who wish to stay overnight in the Similan Islands, it’s important to get organized. Planning should be done well in advanced. The National Park is open from start of November until 16th. May.  

Reservations can only be confirmed 2 month before arrival and no late than 1 month before arrival.

When the NP has confirmed your booking, the full amount has to be paid within 7 days.

Stays more than 1 night requires that you pay THB 200 per person extra in National Park fee.

If you got a connecting flight out of Phuket the same day that your Similan trip ends, you should not book any flights earlier 19:45 departure.

It’s not possible to combine overnight stays on the islands with Scuba Diving. For those interested in Scuba Diving please book Liveaboard where you will have your accommodation on the ship among other divers.

The program the first day follows the full day excursion until after lunch on Island no. 4.  – After this you wave goodbye to the speedboat and you are now buy yourself until the next day when the speedboat arrives again. By departure from Island no. 4 you once again will be part of the day tour itinerary.

It’s not compulsory to return to pick up destination. You can continue your own program after returning to the mainland.

he national park of the Similan Islands [1] (เกาะสิมิลัน) is in southern Thailand, 50 kilometers west of Khao Lak. It is considered the best place in Thailand for divers. The park covers 140 square kilometers in total, 14 of those being land in the shape of an archipelago consisting of nine islands. They are Ko Bon, Ko Bayu, Ko Similan, Ko Payu, Ko Miang (two adjoining islands), Ko Payan, Ko Payang, and Ko Huyong. For simplicity they are often referred to by their number instead - 1 through 9 starting from the south. Recently, the park was expanded to include the two remote islands Ko Bon and Ko Tachai, but since "Sembilan" is Malay for "nine" this doesn't seem to stick in people's minds and those are not visited as often as the original nine. History The islands were created by upwellings of hot magma during the Tertiary-Cretaceous period some 65 million years ago, then smoothed by glacial ice and the erosion by the sea. The coral reefs are about 5000 years old and hence the oldest in Thailand. In 1982, the national park was established and now it is scheduled to become a World Heritage. The 2004 tsunami left the islands and the underwater landscape almost unharmed, since the waters are very deep around the islands. Log Wildkingdom Tours - Great Hornbill. Hornbill's is a family member of a large Old World tropical bird spices which have enormous curved bills and often a bony cask on the head. Thirteen of the worlds 54 species occur in Thailand. As fruit eaters they are critical to seed dispersal, with out them the forest would not be as luxuriant odr diverse. Great hornbills mate for life and, like all hornbills, nest in hollw tree cavities. The female will plaster the entrance with a mixture of mud, tree bark, wooddust, food debris and even her own fethers. Only a small crack, big enugh to let the male passing food trough will remain the the contact to the outer world. For millions of years hornbills have been a model for good parenting.
