This tour program is set up privately with your own guide and can start the day you wish

Day 1 / L                                                                                            B = Breakfast / L = Lunch / D = Dinner

Pick up in Phuket or Khao Lak by the local guide. (Reverse order starting from Krabi, Samui eller Surat Thani)

Photo stop at the police boat that was washed 2 km inland during the tsunami 26DEC04. About an hour later we arrive to the elephant camp in Khao Sok, where the real adventure will start.

Elephant trekking:

Walking along and in a stream you’ll feel the sensation of sitting on the back of the largest land animal in the world as you are puzzled over the precise walk and agility of this great beast. The machine that can replace this animal’s performance in the forest has not yet been invented! Aided by more than forty commands, which the elephant remembers easily, the mahout or elephant driver can make the animal do even the most difficult tasks. The ride’s halfway point is a beautiful waterfall where we can swim and relax.

Our transport will continue and soon we will have a tremendous bird’s eye view over the distinctive character of the landscapes in the Khao Sok area. On arrival to Art’s River View Lodge we check in and have lunch. In the afternoon we depart for a new adventure.

Canoeing: At the beautiful Sok River, we launch the canoes. The river twists and turns between the tall limestone casts and the evergreen rainforest. Butterflies of all colors search the banks of the river for nectar. It’s not a condition that you have tried to paddle before. In every canoe we’ll have a local guide who’ll point out wildlife you would have difficulties discovering your self.

Well back in the Lodge again you can relax in the restaurants terrace. A group long tailed Macaque monkeys inhabit the mountain across from the river of Art’s. Normally before sunset the whole group will approach the river. From the restaurant deck you will have good vision of this occurrence.

Overnight: Art’s River View Lodge. “Best views, Best huts & Best food”.

Day 2

In the morning hiking tour to Buddhist cave temple: We cross the small Sok River and move along the base of the limestone cliffs through a forest, before we reach a palm oil plantation. Monks from the nearby temple have set up meditation spots in the shade of the out hanging cliffs and in the biggest of them all the novices takes lessens by there master. (This excursion can not be done under curtain periods in the rainy season; due to the river will flood the trail).

After this your will have time to seek the adventures by your self or to relax in the peaceful surroundings.

The main gate to The National Park is only a few hundred meters away. A hike, at the marked trails can easy be done by your self. It has its advantages to bring drinking water and a lunch pack with you. Enjoy your picnic lunch at one of the many waterfalls in the National Park. We continue to Chiew Lan Lake about 70 km away and depart from the Rajjabrapa pier. On the way to the raft houses we will sail amidst spectacular rock formations and make a detour for Gulin of Khao Sok. A scenic place on the lake. Short after arrival to our floating bungalows in a remote corner of the lake lunch will be served.

There will be time fore a refreshing swim in the crystal clear lake before we will start a hiking tour through the rainforest accompanied by the sounds of the Gibbon monkeys call. On the way a bamboo raft will bring us to a newly discovered dripstone cave. Well back on the bungalow raft enjoy paddling along the banks of the lake around sunset to scout for wildlife. Before breakfast take a canoe or arrange with the boat driver to take you for a safari to scan the banks. Description of Arts River View Lodge:

The best located bungalow resort in the Khao Sok area. So far no multi national hotel chain has found its way to the beauty of this place and that’s why you will not find any 3, 4 or 5 star accommodations. Art’s River View Lodge can on the other hand by night offer millions of stars glittered in the sky in competition with the fireflies.

This Resort is genially located with respect for the surrounding nature. All bungalows have a terrace and several of them face the Sok River. All units has electricity (but power cuts is not unusual), mosquito nets covering the beds, electrical fan, bath room with sit down toilet and show with non heated water.

The staff is not addicted to stress and small misunderstandings could occur when you order meals from the incidentally varied and balanced menu card.

For breakfast try the yoghurt mixed with muesli or fresh fruits (this is a big bowl, so maybe this alone will fill you up). Do you want a real knock out drink, try Art’s Jungle Juice.

“Best views, Best huts & Best food”.

Description of Chiew Larn Jungle Raft:

Chiew Larn Jungle Raft is rustic bungalows build from mainly from collected materials in its surround forest. The beds are double sized mattresses placed direct on the springy bamboo floor. Everything is clean and nice, but an overnights stay here demands a minimum of camping or boy scout spirit. Beds are covered with mosquito nets. The raft houses are connected to the banks of the lake by a catwalk. Here you will find the toilets and shower rooms. The staffs live in harmony with the nature surrounding them. The attitude of the people living there daily life in this area is very relaxed. Please don’t show offensive behaviours like nude swimming, kissing in public and criticize food dishes. Water there will be served at all times, is clean. Mistakes and misunderstandings are normal to occur. Try to be tolerant in this matter.

There English skills are not at any university level, but even though you will get many interesting information’s about the flora and fauna in the National Park. Meals served are prepared with the usual Thai loving care and considered the simplicity of the cooking facilities the food is very delicious. The raft house has a limited supply of beer and soft drinks available. If you are a snack eater, then bring it with you to the lake.

Morning safari

345 million years ago...
Khao Sok was covered in a delta system (similar to today’s Mississippi delta). The landmasses started to erode and mudstone and soil fell into the delta. This made both the rivers and the sea shallow and corals and other organisms developed. 280-55 million years ago...
More eroded mudstone and soil fell into the delta, and this created the limestone we see today. Fossils from this period tell us that the sea was warm at that time and that Khao Sok was part of a huge coral reef, stretching all the way from China to Borneo. The coral reef was 5 times bigger than today's "Great Barrier Reef" in Australia. Granite mixed with limestone and other chemicals, and a lot of tin and tungsten was made. 66 millions years ago...Today's landscape was founded. The limestone was forced upwards when the Indian land-plate crashed into the Eurasian plate. (This happened at the same time as the Himalaya mountain range was formed. As the Himalayan Mountain rose, Thailand was moved south-eastwards). The ice age didn't really affect Khao Sok. The ice never reached this far south in Asia, leaving the landscape and the rivers as they were. When the ice melted again, more water than ever floated into the rivers of Khao Sok, making the flora even richer than it was before. This is why the rainforest in Khao Sok is older than the forests of Central America and the Amazons, which were covered with ice stunting floral growth and reverting it to savannah and grassland. 50000 - 37000 years ago...Evidence has been found of human habitation on Borneo from this period. It is believed that the same people inhabited Khao Sok as well, since the landscape, with all its caves, fruits, plants and animals, was similar to Borneo's landscape. In 1800...The first historical evidence of human inhabitants in Khao Sok is from 1800. It was during the rule of Rama II and the conflict between Burma and Thailand. A group of survivors from the west coast were forced to hide away in the forest. They discovered the richness of the forest and quickly learned agriculture, fishing and hunting in order to survive. Large tracts of forest was cut down to make room for the growing population. In 1944...A deadly epidemic swept trough the same group of people. The few survivors moved away and the old village was named "Ban Sop"-The village of the dead. The jungle could rest for a while. In 1961...
A road was build straight across the area, to connect Surat Thani on the east coast and Phang Nga on the west coast. Many people settled down along the road and cut down trees and vegetation to give room for houses and plantations. The area was rich with tin and timber, and the government began to sell properties for logging and mining.
It was a big loss for the forest. In 1971...It was discovered that the old delta system was nearly intact and Khao Sok was considered as a possible el-supply for southern Thailand. The area was inspected furthered and people started to realize the wealth of vegetation, animals, limestone mountains and waterfalls. It was decided that all logging and mining should stop, but it took many years before this actually came into effect. In 1976 -1980...A group of communistic students failed to make the changes they wanted in the community, and ended up being considered outlaws. They camped far inside the jungle to avoid the army, which was looking for them. The subsequent conflict made part of the human population in Khao Sok disappear and the rainforest had a chance to breath. In 1980...Khao Sok was officially established as Thailand's 22nd national park on the 22nd of December and measured 645 km2. Later the same year, the borders of the national park were changed to make it possible to flood an area inside Khao Sok, to build the Rachabrapha dam. The dam still supplies large parts of Southern Thailand with electricity. A huge rescue operation to save the wildlife took place before the flooding. More than 1300 birds, mammals and reptiles was captured and moved away from the area. S
