Koh Lipe forms part of the Butang archipelago, which is situated to the west of Koh Tarutao. This is a group of around 20 islands; some are large and mountainous with primary rainforest and fringed by coral reefs; some are tiny rocky islets made of diorite, which is similar to granite but with less quartz. The Butang archipelago has the largest tides in Thailand and currents can be strong, leading to a very rich marine life. This is the reason why scuba diving and snorkelling are so special in these waters The inhabitants of Koh Lipe are known as the Chao Leh, which means “people of the sea” in Thai, or sea-gypsies. The Chao Leh who settled along the Western Coast of Thailand form distinct social groups. Those living in Koh Adang, Koh Lipe, Koh Bulon and Koh Lanta are known as the Urak Lawoy and originated from Malaysia and Indonesia. To Kiri was the first village headman of Lipe. In 1909 he visited the islands many times on invitation from the governor of Satun. The King of Thailand later gave him the island and some Chao Leh from Koh Lanta came and settled on Koh Lipe. Today there are around 700 Chao Leh living in Koh Lipe and Koh Adang and around 200 in Koh Bulon Don and Koh Bulon Leh The Chao Leh language reflects the Polynesian Malay roots of their forefathers. They also retain their animist beliefs and believe in the spirits of their ancestors, the island and the sea. Bad spirits cause trouble such as illness. Good spirits protect the fishermen. Twice a year, during the full moon in late May or early June and late October or early November, the Chao Leh hold a spiritual festival called pla juk or loy rua, where they pay respects to the memory of their ancestors and in particular, To Kiri, their founding father. They build an elaborate two metre long boat out of rakam and teenped wood into which they place food such as chilli peppers, fish, rice and cakes. They also put in cut hair and nail clippings. The festival lasts three days with dancing and much drinking every evening. On the third day they set the boat to sail. If it does not return to shore it is a good omen for the following year, if it does then not so good The creation of Tarutao National Marine Park and its recognition by UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1973 marked the end of the total freedom of sea gypsies. Settlements in Koh Rawi and Koh Adang were displaced to promote protection of the coral reefs and rainforest, hence their culmination on Koh Lipe. Their village is situated on the northern coast of Koh Lipe and protected from the southwest monsoon winds, which begin in May and end at the start of November Tourism and the introduction of money started in the mid-eighties and the first resorts were built in the nineties I 1938 blev der anlagt en thailandsk straffekoloni på øen Koh Tarutao i Andanaman havet, så langt væk fra hovedstaden Bangkok som muligt og kun 5 kilometer fra den Malaysiske ø Langkawi.

Koh Lipe's long white sandy beaches, friendly Chao Ley culture, breathtakingly clear water, and laid back style make this island the perfect holiday retreat. Koh Lipe, pronounced as Ko Lee-pae, is located about 50km from the mainland (Satun Province) and is part of the Butang Islands in Tarutao National Marine Park. In close proximity to Malaysia, Langkawi is visible from Koh Lipe's Eastern coastline - with an immigration station to stamp you in and out of Thailand, Koh Lipe is a great choice for your first or last stop in Thailand. Whatever your island needs, Koh Lipe’s unspoiled beaches and aquamarine water are sure to satisfy even the most discerning beachcomber. Pattaya, Sunlight, Sunset and Karma Beach. All beaches are connected by footpaths and it takes about an hour or two to walk the entire island. The local inhabitants, Chao Ley, mainly derive their livelihood from fishing. The recent boom in tourism has seen that change. Some have opened up restaurants serving local food as well as boat tours and taxi services. Read more about the Chao Ley here There are roughly 600 bungalows on Koh Lipe, ranging from tents on the beach to the more outstanding with panoramic views. See our accommodation section for more information about each resort. Lipe has developed a reputation of filling up quickly and leaving people to sleep on the beach, especially during holidays and long-weekends. We can recommend some idyll beaches for camping or accommodation with online reservations so you can plan before you go We can be reached by longtail or ferry from Pakbarra, Koh Lanta, Trang or Langkawi. See the updated Ferry Schedule The History of the Tarutao Marine Park goes back to 1939 when a prison was constructed on Tarutao Island. During the Second World War, due to lack of supplies, both prisoners and guards became a much feared group of pirates. After the war the British Naval Troops restored order and the Corrections Department closed down the prison. Villagers from nearby provinces settled on Tarutao Island to cultivate rice, fruit and rubber. In 1972 the National Park was declared, and most settlers where relocated. Sea gypsies where the original inhabitants of the waters in the Andaman Sea, moving from beach to beach depending on season and the availability of food. Today most Sea Gypsies have permanently settled down, and a small Group lives on Koh Lipe. The Tarutao National Marine Park consists of a group of 51 islands in the Southern part of the Andaman Sea, near the Thai - Malay border. 2 clusters of islands lay in between 20 and 70 kilometres from the mainland. The largest island is Koh Tarutao and is over 10 kilometres wide and about 26 long. This mountainous island is covered mainly with rain forest and there are several mangrove swamps. A few long sandy stretches of unspoiled beach and some caves can also be found. The second group of islands that makes up the marine park is the furthest away from the mainland and includes Koh Lipe, Koh Adang, Koh Rawi and Koh Dong. The largest islands Adang and Rawi are almost completely covered with rain forest. During rainy season several waterfalls run of Adang into the sea. The waters around Koh Lipe and it's neighbouring islands are very clear and house a wide variety of living coral and other marine life. The waters around Koh Lipe, Koh Adang and Koh Rawi house an enormous variety of marine species, including: dolphins, mantas and other rays, sharks, sperm whales, but also plenty of reef fish like clown fish, angelfish, lion fish and all sorts of coral. And although over fishing has taken its toll on the fish population and some of the coral has been damaged there is still an abundance of marine life in this area. Other wildlife that can be spotted mainly on the larger islands (Koh Tarutao - Koh Adang - Koh Rawi): crab eating macaques, wild pigs, monitor lizards, mouse deer, hornbills, sea eagles, snakes, Most of the park is covered with a mix of rain and monsoon forest. Ko Lipe is not That developed, so don't expect too much. Travellers with medical expertise are invited.
